The University of Cincinnati Bearcat Bands takes many forms over the course of the year. This gives members a complete band experience and provides opportunities for members to keep involved throughout the year when they are not on co-op.

Marching Band

The UC Marching Band is the most visible of our bands and performs at all home and select away football games as well as any bowl games in which the team may compete. In addition to football games the Marching Band also performs for events such as UC Convocation, marching competitions, and various performances around Cincinnati.

Marching season usually begins with band camp at the end of August. The Marching Band is in full scale operation from the beginning of September until the last football game of the year (including a potential bowl game), although the performance schedule is much more intense near the beginning of the season.

Participants in Marching Band are largely undergraduate students at the University of Cincinnati from a wide variety of academic fields. The average number of participants each season is ~250 members who have the option of playing a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument as well as twirling a flag, rifle, or baton.

Concert Band

The UC Concert Band consists of two or more groups of students, with at least one being a traditional concert band arrangement and the other varying due to available instrumentation. Annual performances of the Concert Band include an end-of-year concert usually held at the end of Spring Semester in CCM. Some members of the Concert Band participate in the performances of other area ensembles.

The members of Concert Band are largely the same members from Marching Band and Pep Band. On certain occasions older members of the university participate in Concert Band but may no longer have the interest or ability to participate in the more physically demanding aspects of Marching Band and/or Pep Band. The composition of the one or more concert bands each year depends on the number of participants and the available instrumentation.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band season starts during the Spring Semester with two available jazz bands usually on Monday nights. The first available is an early Jazz Band directed by Assistant Director Jody Besse. The second available Jazz Band, usually known as the Late Jazz Band, is directed by the Director of Bands, Dr. Terren Frenz.

Percussion Ensemble

In the Spring semester, there are 1-2 percussion ensembles offered through The Bearcat Bands program. Any band member has the ability to register for this group. The music can range from classical transcriptions to modern percussion literature of all styles.

Winter Guard

During the Spring semester, the color guard opens their group to the other band member and competes with other accents in competitions around Ohio. They also put together their competition show to perform during the semester at the Fifth Third Arena.

Small Ensembles

The small ensemble is a unique addition to the Bearcat Bands. Anyone who wishes to organize an ensemble, has an opportunity to perform at one of the final concerts of the year.

Pep Band

While the basketball season begins at the end of the Fall semester, we encourage all of our marching band members to stay to perform with the pep band. During March Madness, the band is given the opportunity to send a small pep band with the basketball teams to their tournament games around the nation!

Community Band

During the summer the Rockwern Band Center is in full swing hosting Community Band, a group of alumni, current students and community members who want to continue their band experience during the summer months. This ensemble performs multiple concerts each summer all around the Cincinnati area, and plays in a concert band style.
